Tri-County Community College has two new scholarships thanks to the sixth annual Fishing for Scholarships Bass Tournament held Saturday, April 5, on Lake Chatuge.

The tournament was co-sponsored by the Tri-County Bass Club and proceeds went to fund two $1000 scholarships for Tri-County Community College students.

“Thanks to the hard work of the bass club, and our TCCC family of faculty and staff volunteers, there will be two more scholarships available for deserving students this fall,” said Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers, TCCC President. “We appreciate all the participants who competed in the tournament to make it a big success.”

Over one-hundred fisherman from three states in 52 boats participated in the event and cash prizes were awarded to the top six teams, for the largest spotted bass and large-mouth bass, and smallest fish caught during the one day tournament.

The first place winners of $1,000, with a total catch weight of 22.38 pounds, were Jeremy Cross and Butch Hooper, both of Hayesville, North Carolina. Jeremy and Butch also landed the largest spotted bass weighing in at 5.32 pounds which netted another $250 in prize money.

The biggest large-mouth bass was caught by David and Dee McConnell of Franklin, North Carolina. It weighed in at 7.78 pounds and they received a $250 prize for their fish. David and Dee also won 4th Place and $400 in the overall competition with a total catch weight of 18.53 pounds.

The $100 prize for the smallest fish went to Bruce Rickett, Andrews, North Carolina, and Phillip Rickett of Knoxville, Tennessee, for their 1.42 pound bass.

Other winners included: 2nd Place $700 – Bitt Ledford, Murphy, North Carolina, and Jack Suites, Ducktown, Tennessee (18.85 pounds); 3rd Place $500 – Bobby Stalcup, Murphy, North Carolina, and John LaDouceur, Marble, North Carolina (18.62 pounds); and 5th Place $300 – Ronnie Brewer and Johnny Brooks, both of Clayton,
Georgia (17.32 pounds).
