Tri-County Community College and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel: a partnership a year in the making!

Tri-County Community College partners with Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino

It was over a year ago that representatives from Tri-County Community College met with representatives from Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort to discuss how best to prepare Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County residents for the upcoming job opportunities at Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel. Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers, Tri-County Community College President wanted to “prepare area residents for casino opportunities; offering realistic previews of the expectations of working in the casino by initiating informational sessions as well as “pre-hire” classes. A partnership with Harrah’s Cherokee afforded the perfect platform to accomplish those goals.” Tri-County offered to advertise, schedule, and host the informational and pre-hire sessions, and a year later over 800 local residents have been to one of the informational sessions and approximately 425 have been through pre-hire classes.

Tipton- Rogers also stated, “The Mission of Tri-County Community College is to engage students in learning, help students succeed, and enrich the communities we serve. We achieve that by strong local and regional partnerships. With Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River opening in late summer of 2015, we wanted to afford Cherokee, Clay, and Graham County residents the opportunity to prepare themselves for the 800+ jobs the casino is creating.”

“We expect the majority of our casino workforce to live in one of the three local counties,” stated Lumpy Lambert, VP and General Manager of Valley River. “We offer training for all of our line-level positions and leadership development for employees wanting to advance to a supervisor or manager. We work when others play, so most of our positions will work nights, weekends, and holidays. Tri-County Community College has helped better prepare interested applicants to be successful in our industry. ”

Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel, in partnership with Tri-County Community College, will be hosting the first local job fair for two positions that require lengthy training on Friday, March 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Tri-County Community College Enloe Building on the main campus. Anyone interested in either Table Games Dealer or Surveillance positions are encouraged to attend. For more information, or to apply online, go to or call 1-828-497-8778.
