More than 1,000 local elementary students poured into Tri-County Community College’s Enloe Multi-Purpose Room to watch Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana company perform traditional and modern flamenco dances during the 19th Annual Children’s Theatre event on March 28 at the main campus in Peachtree.

“On behalf of our president Dr. Donna Tipton-Rogers, we are so excited to have you all on our campus today,” said Bill Vespasian, vice president for business and finance. “These performers are fantastic and we know you’re going to have a great time.”

Students from schools across Cherokee, Clay, Graham, and Union counties watched transfixed as the company began with a traditional flamenco dance, with live musicians and vibrant costumes.

“We are here to teach you a little about the art form of flamenco dancing,” performer Eliza Gonzalez told the audience. “This is a blend of a lot of cultures, and it is all about feelings and rhythm.”

Gonzalez went on to explain how the performers utilize their hands and feet to create rhythm for their dances. She also taught students the Spanish words for several components of flamenco dances including the instruments used by the performers.

The annual Children’s Theatre event is a project through the Tri-County Community College Foundation, which aims to bring performing arts to the students of Western North Carolina. The 19th Annual Children’s Theatre event was made possible with a grant through the North Carolina Arts Council.

“We always strive to ensure that our annual Children’s Theatre event delivers both educational enrichment and entertaining cultural experiences to the school-age children in our service areas,” Tipton-Rogers said. “This year was a fantastic success, and it is always wonderful to see our local students learn in such a vibrant and joyful manner.”
